The Lego movie : intertextuality.                                                        26/04/18

LO : to explore the intertextuality of the Lego Movie.

Emmet, an ordinary LEGO figurine who always follows the rules, is mistakenly identified as the Special -- an extraordinary being and the key to saving the world. He finds himself drafted into a fellowship of strangers who are on a mission to stop an evil tyrant's plans to conquer the world. Unfortunately for Emmet, he is hopelessly -- and hilariously -- unprepared for such a task, but he'll give it his all nonetheless.

The message of the film is to be happy and to be creative. Also believe in yourself.

Batman, Green lantern, Superman, Gandalf.

LO - to explore the intertextuality of the lego movie.

Postmodernism

Films with this often contain the following characteristics:

  • Challenges genre conventions : might be a mixture of many genres ; challenge typical character roles.
  • Pastiche: imitates other texts, humorous take on society/culture.
  • Hyper-reality: makes the audience aware that they are watching a movie.
The lego movie is a postmodernist film because it contains pastiche. An example of this is where they have over priced coffee and also The Matrix. At the end of the movie it goes back to the real world/life which is an example of hyper-reality. The lego movie is a mixed genre film such as: action, sci-fi, fantasy, comedy and animation.

LO : to explore the intertextuality of the lego movie.                               21/05/18

Locations
The Matrix is the false/simulated world and the place with the spaceship is the real world. In the Lego Movie the lego city and the skyscrapers is the false world. This is how they are both similar.

Characters
Neo from the matrix and Emmet from the lego movie are both the main characters/hero/chosen one/. Trinity from the matrix and Wyldstyle are similar because they both follow Neo and Emmets path. Vitruvius from the Lego Movie and Morpheus from the Matrix and also very similar because they were very wise and guided the hero in a way.

Themes/messages
To believe in yourself and don't give up. Importance of imagination and creativity. You don't always need to follow instructions.

Narrative
The similarity of the films are - Neo and Emmet don't believe they are the heroes of the film and are unaware. They are then given  a quest to save the world and succeed and are then the chosen one.

Evaluate the advantages and the disadvantages of the intertextual relationship between the Matrix and The Lego Movie.

The advantages of basing the Lego Movie on the Matrix is that it is the modern version of the Matrix. Younger children would maybe like the story line of the Matrix but may not be able to understand it properly so The Lego Movie is a more understandable version for younger children. The adults will also recognise and appreciate the references own the movie. It is more colourful and more cheerful. The lego movie also includes characters that younger children may recognise such as Batman. The disadvantages of basing The Lego Movie on the Matrix is that it may take over the matrix and the matrix might not be as popular as it was.

1. What are the building blocks of success?

The building blocks of success are a common theme is that a brand will create useful or entertaining content targeted at consumers that will soon be in a position to pay for the companys services and products.

2. what did Lego do right?
The company bought in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to create a genuinely funny and clever movie.

3. How has it laid the foundations for future success?
It has laid the foundation for the future because it will possibly be in cycle and more popular in the future because parents may show their children this film and children when they get older will show their children this. They also think this will sit on the DVD shelf for a long time considering how popular the movie was.

4. How has it got heart?
It has heart because it has an emotive storyline that explores the meaning of love, partnership and humanity, the lego movie does what it needs to do.

5. How is it all about 'you'?
There result is a resonance tat drills the brand into a deep level of out psyche thats rarely visited by commercial content.

6. How does it show that it knows its audience?
Film critics laud this movies ability to offer 'something for everyone' with a healthy dose of slapstick for the kids, cultural savvy for the teens and scathing yet hilarious social commentary for the grown-ups. In other words its nailed its content pillars.

The Lego Movie exploits the movie by using websites, posters, social media, TV adverts, trailers, in stores and also held events. They also had a chain of  drinking cups which were realeased in the happy meal of the world famous fast food chain Macdonalds. These were popular because they were 3D and they attracted attention. They were also reusable which meant people could keep them and it would be shown often. The movie poster was very colourful and would catch your eye easily. There was a Lego Movie advert however, ITV turned over an entire advert break during its Sunday night edition of Dancing On Ice to Lego during which adverts from BT, Confused.com and Premier. They were original adverts however were all in a Lego form/made from Lego. They also used social media to promote the movie and to influence people to watch it such as: Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. People also made fan accounts for the movie on social media.

Video Games                                                                                        14/06/18

LO - to explain how vertical integration benefits companies; to analyse using uses and gratification theory.

Lego game:

Films with a video game:
  • Super Mario Bros
  • Frozen
  • Barbie
  • Moshi Monsters
  • Harry Potter
Reasons why companies make video games to accompany films:
  • Profit Maximised - the promotion of a film will create a receptive awareness in potential consumers of the game: they have heard of it and are familiar with it.
  • Familiarity - the brand and plot and characters are already known: recognition of the fact we liked the film so may enjoy the game based on it.
  • Extends the pleasure of the film - a chance to continue to 'be part of' the film that we enjoyed. Chance to play the roles we saw in the film.
  • The game promotes the film, the film promotes the game - efficient use of marketing of both products and increases potential audience as fans 'crossover' between the two platforms. Think of how the theme of Bond films piggy-backs on the promotion of the film and vice-versa.

Poster campaign                                                                                  21/06/18

Lo - to explain the effectiveness of the campaign to analyse using uses and gratification theory.

Lego made over 20 teaser posters on the Lego Movie. They made a teaser poster for every character in the movie. The characters in the poster included stereotypes but also attempted to reflect the context of greater gender equality. The main concepts of the teaser posters are: image of the character, characters name and actor and finally the Lego Movie logo. Unlike posters made closer to the release which have release dates and exciting news. This ism why its called a teaser poster (because there is not much information on the poster).
Examples of the teaser posters:

Gender stereotypes: The genders in the movie are stereotypical. Wyldstyle wears red lipstick, has long eyelashes, has hair in a side tie, has eyebrows and has blue and pink strands of hair. Emmet has a  builders outfit on and has a more male haircut.

Exam question:
The Lego Movie posters use stereotypes to show what the characters are/act.

For example Wyldstyle is a love interest and is rebellious. They show that she is a love interest and people find her attractive by giving her long eyelashes, shaped eyebrows and freckles. Unlike the other characters they don't have any special appearances like her. Denotations of her being rebellious is her black hair with pink and blue strands with the side tie.

Another example is the villain. He has very high eyebrows and on the teaser poster has a mouth that looks like he's shouting. His hair is also very big and crazy which can connote that he is the villain.
