Statement of Intent (draft)

My coursework is going to be an educational magazine front cover and double page spread targeted towards an audience of 10-13 year olds of any gender and any race. My front cover and double page spread will be on the topic of baking. It will appeal to my target audience because it will evoke a good attitude to overcoming new creations and ideas. For my coursework to be able to appeal to certain audiences they will most likely have to be interested in baking and food. My coursework will include bright colours and images to target the audience of 10-13 year olds. My front cover will include a masthead, straplines, cover lines, a main image, barcodes, price and edition number. My double page spread will include a headline, subheadings, 1 main image, at least 3 minor images, an article and an article linked to the cover line. I plan on using the colours yellow, white, blue and grey on my front cover and on my double page spread I plan on using the colours blue, yellow, red and white. On my coursework I will include a range of colourful and outstanding fonts and images to bring excitement into the work. My layout will be fun, exciting and understandable. I will aim to have doodles on my double page spread to fit in with the target audience of a slightly younger age. This will make the coursework look more exciting and fun which will ensure it is an enjoyable magazine.

Statement of Intent (final)

My coursework is going to be an educational magazine front cover and double page spread targeted towards an audience of 10-13 year olds of any gender and any race. The topic of my coursework will be baking. I have chosen baking because it allows this age range to experiment with new ideas and It will appeal to my target audience because it will evoke a good attitude to overcoming new creations and ideas. The magazine will also be aimed at children who enjoy baking and who want to get stuck in. My coursework will include bright colours such as yellow, white, blue and red. I have chosen these colours because they are bright and will all outstand nicely when put together. Also, these aren’t used stereotypically to represent a certain gender. I will also aim to include a range of colourful and different fonts, images and doodles and a sensible layout to ensure the audience will have a clear, exciting understanding of the magazine and its directions. My front cover will include a masthead, straplines, cover lines, a main image, barcodes, price and edition number. My double page spread will include a headline, subheadings, 1 main image, at least 3 minor images, an article and an article linked to the cover line. I will aim not to use people in any of the images as I don’t want to conform to traditional stereotypes of female bakers. I want the entire magazine to be represented as a fun, gender neutral enjoyable magazine for the target audience of 10-13 year olds.

Lo - To research codes and conventions of similar products.

  • Educational magazine genre codes and conventions: what are they and how are they used?
The magazine 'horrible histories' is based on history which is an educational genre.
  • Layout codes and conventions
The layout of the magazine is A4 and is of a double page spread. On the front cover the masthead is at the top of the page which stands out the most and is the first thing you will look at when you pick the magazine up.All over the front cover there are animated images with information of what is included within the magazine.
  • How a house style (characteristics used to differentiate brand from others) is established by the use of font/colour/images/layout.

  • Production values (high or low?)
The production value of the magazine 'horrible histories' is in between high and low values. The magazine front cover is matte and the inside of the magazine is matte paper which is slightly thicker than A4. The quality of the magazine is okay however could be better quality.

Lo - to research our target audience to enable successful targeting.

Target audience profile:

Demographics -

  • Race - white
  • Location - In a kitchen
Psychographics -

  • Personality - creative
  • Values -
  • Attitude - Good attitude to overcoming new creations
  • Interests - Cooking/baking/food
  • Lifestyle -

My target audience is aged 10-13 year old, therefore they might not like the academics in school and may prefer the creative fun subjects in school. They may have hobbies such as cooking and they might also enjoy doing this. My audience may live in a rural area where they may not be able to socialise as easily therefore they cook/bake. Their favourite subjects in school may include food and technology. They may also enjoy science. They probably find family important to them as they back and cook for their family. They socialise at school and may also invite their friends around and cook/bake with them. Their friends would describe them as kind and creative when baking.
