How does The Lego Movie fit the term POSTMODERNISM?

Week 2

How does the Lego Movie appeal to each of the FAMILY TARGET AUDIENCES using the following areas?
  • Characters
  • Narrative
  • Settings
  • Themes
3 sections of the FAMILY TARGET AUDIENCE:
  1. Kids who like Lego
  2. Parents of kids who used to play Lego themselves
  3. Young cinema goers
Kids who like Lego:
The Lego movie characters appeal to children who like Lego by making the whole film made out of Lego. Apart from the ending where Finn and his father are in the house where the Lego world is. The characters stand out in the way of stereotypes of Lego. The characters such as Emmet are also funny, An example of this is when batman saves Emmet and Wyldstyle from the alligators in the river. Emmet makes some funny comments. The narrative of the Lego movie relates to children who like Lego because it is a film easy for little ones to understand and when watching the film the image is also easy for little children to watch and understand. The settings of the Lego Movie are very right and colourful and exciting which keeps little children entertained. There are different lands that characters travel to and from in the movie which link in with the themes such as:

Parents of kids who used to play Lego themselves:
The Lego movie characters may appeal to parents due to the way that some of the characters act or they might recognise some of them. If they are this part of the audience it might appeal to them in the way that Lego has modernised over years. They might be interested in this. Parts of the narrative may include some adult humour that only adults may understand which may appeal to them. The setting of the Lego movie changes a lot which may also make them compare back then and now.

How did they promote the Lego movie?
They used many different methods to promote the Lego Movie such as Macdonalds teaser posters and the main one - the huge TV advert. On one of ITV strictly come dancIng breaks they turned one of them into a whole advert of Lego! All of the supported brands were made out of Lego which caught a lot of people’s eyes.

Week 3

Explain why the TV advertising campaign was so successful.
The advertising campaign was successful because they made sure the adverts were new and not remakes of classic ADs. In between each advert there would be striking hint of the lego movie film to interest people.
Explain what SYNERGY is in marketing.
Synergy is when two marketing initiatives create a response greater that the businesses two responses put together. The key to achieving marketing synergy is in multiple, low cost initiatives.
Explain how Lego used SYNERGY to promote the movie.
One of the main promotion techniques Lego used to promote the movie was adverts. On a Sunday nights episode of dancing on ice they turned one of their adverts into Lego. All of the adverts such as:
heart foundation, confused.com, BT broadband and premier inn were featured which was SYNERGY. I know this because Lego and the companies would of had to join together to produce the best for both of them.
Explain why a film company would want to release a video game to tie in with a film?
A film company would produce a video game to tie with the film because video games are addictive and this means that people would be dragged into the film which would lead to more income.

Week 4

Give the FOUR USES AND GRATIFICATIONS that Blumler and Katz give for accesing media.
  • Information
  • Personal identity
  • Entertainment
  • Relationship
Analyse how the USES AND GRATIFICATIONS of the Lego Movie Video Game are reflected in the cover.

Information:
The cover of the movie is giving information in many ways such as: The figures on the front - this shows us the figures in the movie. The figures may be recognised which could  make people want to watch the movie. Another peace of information given are the cities made out of Lego positioned as the background of the cover. This shows us that the majority of the movie is made entirely out of Lego! Finally, the obvious peace of information on the cover is the writing. This could include the title, what type of DVD it is such as Blu-Ray, and the voiceovers/actors.

Personal identity:
Whilst the bright colours of the front cover continue to catch everyone's eye, they might make us think about who we really are. It might bring your childhood back and bring out the child in you! Show the person you are inside.

Entertainment:
Offers distraction from the world.

Relationship:
It will tell us things we can share and discuss with others.

Week 5

Look at the main movie poster. What are the Genre conventions shown?:
The genre of The Lego Movie is animated/fantasy. The colour palette of the movie poster (red, blue, yellow) show us this. This is because they are bright colours which stand out to a fantasy film. If the colour palette was black or grey the audience would automatically think of a horror film or sad film, however this isn't the case. Another genre convention found on the front cover is the font used; block/3D font stands out which automatically tells us that is will be a fantasy style film. The final convention is the image of the characters. They are all running with a certain face which shows us the film is going to be rapid/make you feel nervous about what is going to happen.

Explain how the following elements on the poster appeal to the target audience:

Title - the title appeals to the target audience because it is big, bold and stands out.
Tagline -
Main image, characters -
Main image, setting -

Look at the main poster and the teaser poster. Analyse how they use STEREOTYPES to create REPRESENTATIONS that appeal to the target audience:
