- Narrative - The lyrics are often reflected wishing the story (tells a story).
- Performance - Performance based music video shows the artist/band performing, although they do not have to move or dance.
- Performance montage - is where the people are still performing but in lots of different locations.
- Concept - Rather than featuring the band performing the song, it is presented as a visual narrative (often no link between the visuals and the song), example - sound waves.
- Narrative (illustration) - video matches the lyrics of song.
- Narrative (amplification) - These type of music videos may use both performance and narrative, with connotations of the meaning of the lyrics.
- Narrative (disjuncture) - These videos intentionally ignore the content of the song and genre of the music and tries to create a whole new set of meanings (performance doesn't match the lyrics).
